Special Monthly Compensation (SMC):

Special Monthly Compensation (SMC) is an additional tax-free benefit paid to veterans, their spouses, surviving spouses, and sometimes parents, on top of their regular VA disability compensation. SMC is awarded on top of standard disability ratings. You will receive both your standard VA disability compensation and the additional SMC payment. SMC is intended for those with severe disabilities, loss of limbs or other major impairments resulting from their service. To be eligible for SMC, veterans must have a service-connected disability that meets the criteria for SMC, such as loss of use of a limb, blindness, or paraplegia. Additionally, veterans must require the aid and attendance of another person or be housebound due to their service-connected disabilities.

Who is Eligible for SMC?

  • Veterans: You may be eligible if you have one or more service-connected disabilities that significantly impact your life, such as:

    • Loss of use of a limb or organ

    • Need for aid and attendance of another person for daily activities

    • Specific combinations of disabilities that result in severe limitations

  • Spouses and Surviving Spouses: SMC may be awarded based on the need for aid and attendance.

Special Monthly Compensation Levels:

SMC is paid based on a series of levels (K, L, M, N, O, P) with increasing monthly payments. There are also special rates called SMC rate payment variations. The VA determines the level based on the severity of your disabilities and limitations.

Examples of SMC qualifying conditions:

  • Loss of use of limbs (hands, feet)

  • Blindness in one or both eyes

  • Certain anatomical losses (like loss of a creative organ)

  • Severe burns

  • Inability to independently care for yourself (dressing, bathing, eating)

To submit a claim for SMC, veterans should complete VA Form 21-2680, Examination for Housebound Status or Permanent Need for Regular Aid and Attendance. This form requires veterans to provide information about their medical condition, as well as any relevant medical records or documentation. Veterans may also need to undergo a Compensation and Pension (C&P) exam to determine their eligibility for SMC benefits.
